Description

In Horses in the Meadow, Edgar Degas places two animals across the foreground of a rolling rural view. One turns away from us, while the other appears in right-facing profile. Their contrasting positions make a pattern of bodies against the low hills, with small buildings and fencing farther back. The scene follows a quieter rhythm than a race, allowing the horses to be considered within the open space around them.

Made in 1891–92, the print combines softground etching, aquatint and drypoint. These methods give Degas a range of line and tone for distinguishing the horses from the ground around them. The scene is more than a simple inventory of animals: their placement creates a pattern within the wider view. An everyday rural subject becomes an absorbing study of scale and relationship, with the open setting giving each horse room to register.
