Description

Yvette Guilbert stands toward the left as a slim performer turning in profile to the right, with an arm extended in a long dark glove. Sparse curtain and set lines locate the figure onstage without surrounding her with a dense theatrical interior. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec gives Yvette Guilbert’s performance a concentrated silhouette, letting the directed arm and the open surface hold the moment’s visual emphasis.

The 1898 lithograph is printed with a beige tint stone on laid paper. The long dark glove gives the extended arm particular graphic emphasis, while the lightly indicated setting leaves the figure room to act. Toulouse-Lautrec turns a stage gesture into a clear arrangement of line and tone, making the performer’s direction across the paper more important than a richly furnished backdrop.
