Description

Two Tahitian Women is an 1899 painting by Paul Gauguin that brings two figures close together against deep greens and blues. One holds fruit while the other offers flowers; their gestures and the meeting of their shoulders create an intimate exchange. The close arrangement gives their faces and hands particular importance within the composition.

The painting reflects Gauguin’s imagined tropical world, drawing on classical representations of the nude rather than offering a straightforward documentary account of Tahitian life. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that these figures also appear in two larger works from 1898 and 1899. In Two Tahitian Women, the concentrated pairing makes gesture and expression central to the scene. Strong color and the closeness of the figures create a vivid relationship between visual richness and a quiet moment of communication.
