Description
Ichikawa Danjūrō V appears in a red patterned robe with a sword at the waist and a hand holding a fan near the face. His partly angled frontal stance gives the isolated figure a composed presence. Katsukawa Shunshō makes the paired objects part of the actor’s presentation, retaining the named performer without forcing an unsupported dramatic role onto the encounter.
The 1771 color woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. It gives the actor’s presence a lasting form beyond the time of a performance, where sword, fan and figure can be regarded together. The work invites close attention to that relationship without turning the objects into an unsupported account of a particular scene or action.
