Description
Yoshizawa Iroha appears as a woman on the engawa of a house beside a river, bringing a theatrical figure into a setting between interior life and the surrounding landscape. The tall figure stands in a black robe patterned with large, round gold-colored motifs, with a pale inner garment trailing beside the riverbank and railing. The strong garment shapes give the role a composed presence within the open waterside setting.
Created around 1778, the nishiki-e print was produced with ink and color on paper. The actor’s assumed feminine identity remains central, while the riverside setting gives it a world to inhabit. Katsukawa Shunshō allows the role to be encountered through both person and environment. The image’s appeal lies in that relationship, where the edge of a building becomes a place of contact between a staged human presence and the open space beyond.
