Description
Interior of a Church shows a preacher in a pulpit and worshippers in the pews, set within Gothic architecture and contrasting areas of light and shade. J. M. W. Turner makes the interior an inhabited architectural subject, joining the building’s enclosure with the gathering inside it. The people remain smaller than the surrounding structure, allowing worship and the church’s spatial character to share the scene’s emphasis.
Issued in 1819 for Liber Studiorum, the print combines etching and mezzotint, with Turner developing the tone himself. The composition relates to a painting he made in the late 1790s, but the printed image concentrates its own contrasts. Darker interior forms and lighter openings organize attention, making the church engaging through the relationship between its substantial architecture and the human activity taking place within it.
