Description
The Large Plane Trees shows Vincent van Gogh’s scene of road repairs beneath a huge, twisting trunk, its blue-gray forms contrasting with ochre-yellow ground. Workers appear beside heaps of stone, while the street and buildings extend farther to the right. Branches sweep across the top, giving the practical activity below a setting whose lively natural shapes are as commanding as the human task.
Painted in 1889 in oil on fabric, this is the first version of a composition van Gogh later repeated. Yellowing leaves and glimpses of buildings make the setting distinctly autumnal, while separate brushstrokes give the whole scene a visible pulse. The work finds interest in a place that remains busy and ordinary. Road materials, workers and enormous trees become parts of one visual structure, allowing the act of repairing a street to belong to the landscape’s changing life.
