Description
Andrea Mantegna’s Lamentation over the Dead Christ confronts the viewer with a daring view of the body laid upon a stone slab. Christ’s feet occupy the foreground, while the torso and head recede sharply into the picture. The mourners gathered at the side bring concentrated grief to the spare setting, their faces reinforcing the scene’s intimacy.
Mantegna uses foreshortening to turn a traditional religious subject into an unusually immediate encounter. The exposed wounds, carefully modeled anatomy, and cool surface of the slab lend the image a stark physical presence. Its restrained palette and compressed space make the expressions of sorrow all the more powerful.
