Description
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec brings Léonie Yahne and Henry Mayer into a pale theatrical interior. One head appears toward the left, with a standing figure at the right, allowing the two performers to occupy different levels within the same scene. The restrained surroundings leave their relation open and readable, giving a particular stage encounter the intimacy of a graphic study.
Dated 1895, the crayon and spatter lithograph with scraper was printed in olive green on wove paper and published by Edouard Kleinmann. Toulouse-Lautrec gives a theatrical scene an independent graphic life, preserving one portion of an event rather than the full production. The restricted color connects the represented performers through a unified surface, allowing the printed image to remain distinct from the stage appearance it records.
