Description
Lieven Willemsz van Coppenol sits beside a table holding paper and a quill in Rembrandt’s print, with his grandson’s head visible behind at the right. The older man’s face becomes a bright oval within the dark room. Named identity and family relationship share the image’s interest, while the writing materials give the sitter a particular occupation within the scene.
Dated around 1658, the source combines etching and drypoint, with the plate subsequently darkened using a mezzotint rocker in this later state. The altered surface belongs to the printed history of this impression rather than a new subject. Rembrandt’s paired portrait retains the interest of a person encountered with someone close to him. The work makes identity relational, allowing a familiar name and a family bond to share the image’s concentrated field of attention.
