Description
The Arch of Honor right portal combines imposing architecture with intricate ornament and armored figures. Receding lines draw the eye into the entrance, while elaborate bases and carved motifs give the lower portion of the design a sculptural weight.
This proof is part of the Arch of Honor, dated 1515 and printed in 1517–18. The Metropolitan Museum of Art associates the outer sockel with Albrecht Dürer and the pedestal and entryway with Hans Springinklee or Wolf Traut. The interplay of architectural structure and minute woodcut detail conveys the scale and ambition of the larger imperial monument.
