Description
Madame Lisle by Edgar Degas is a quiet portrait drawing created about 1866–70. Working in charcoal and pastel with red, black, and white chalk on beige wove paper, Degas builds the sitter from restrained tonal shifts and selective color.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art identifies Madame Lisle as a drawing in its collection. The muted paper and layered dry media give the portrait an intimate presence while preserving the searching character of Degas’s draftsmanship.
