Description
In Man at a Desk Wearing a Cross and Chain, Rembrandt shows a half-length figure with his hands near papers and a chain crossing his chest. Pale hair stands out against the dark setting around him. The cross and chain identified in the title contribute to his appearance without securing a name, allowing a particular person and his immediate objects to carry the image’s human interest.
Made in 1641, the etching includes drypoint. Rembrandt gives the scene a lasting material form in which a modest interior encounter can be considered closely. Its interest lies in the relation between a person and the objects around him, where a desk becomes more than background and the visible cross and chain add another register of appearance. The print keeps the figure particular without requiring a full biography, making ordinary occupation of a room a sufficient subject for attention.
