Description

In Manet Seated, Turned to the Right, Edgar Degas shows his fellow artist in profile, with long legs and a visible chair establishing an informal pose. Papers or a book rest in his lap, while the pale face stands out above a dark jacket. The surrounding contrasts direct attention toward a fellow painter seen through close observation rather than ceremonial display.

Made around 1868, the print combines etching and drypoint. The different kinds of line allow Degas to describe the sitter while leaving the act of drawing visible in the printed surface. Its interest lies in the relationship between a recognizable individual and the artist’s choices of emphasis. Manet appears as a person observed, while the portrait quietly records the attention Degas brings to a face, posture and the presence of a contemporary.
