Description
Domenico Campagnola’s Massacre of the Innocents fills a wide scene with struggling figures and imposing architecture. Horses, soldiers, women, and children crowd the foreground, while steps and columns lead toward groups above. Fine dark lines give the image its dense texture.
The composition carries the eye through many simultaneous gestures. Open passages of stone and sky contrast with tightly packed bodies, making the disorder more apparent. The print’s intricate line work allows both the larger movement and individual encounters to remain visible.
