Medea: or The Marriage of Jason and Creusa brings public celebration and private betrayal into the same dramatic space. Rembrandt created the etching in 1648 for the title page of Jan Six’s tragedy. The marriage unfolds on a raised dais, while Medea appears apart from the ceremony in the foreground. Her separation gives the wedding a troubling emotional undertone: what looks like triumph for the couple is a moment of abandonment for her.

The scene gains its power from the distance between the ceremony and the woman watching it. Architecture and the arrangement of the figures give the image a theatrical sweep, yet its heart is the conflict between celebration and grief. Medea transforms an ancient story into a charged encounter, inviting the viewer to notice the tension beneath the spectacle.
