Description
Mont Sainte-Victoire and the Viaduct opens a layered view across the Arc River valley. A tall foreground tree divides the scene, its branches answering the distant mountain’s slopes. Fields, roofs, and the repeated arches of the railway viaduct lead the eye through the broad landscape.
Paul Cézanne painted this view in 1882–85 near Aix-en-Provence. Warm earth tones and cool greens give the valley a carefully balanced structure, while the mountain remains a steady presence beyond it. Natural forms and the measured rhythm of the bridge work together to create a sense of depth, order, and enduring space.
