Description
Ichikawa Danjūrō V stands in a room beside another richly dressed figure, the pair framed by sliding screens and a restrained interior. A checked garment on the left contrasts with the flowing floral robes on the right. Katsukawa Shunshō makes the downward tilt of a head and the careful positioning of the hands carry the encounter, giving a quiet scene an attentive, theatrical character.
Dating to around 1780, the color woodblock design brings its figures forward through clear contours and areas of patterned color. The architecture gives them a setting without competing for attention. Shunshō’s interest here is especially legible in the meeting of costume and posture: garments define the performers’ appearance, while small bodily adjustments suggest a relationship that remains open for the viewer to consider.
