Description
Nakamura Rikō appears in an elegant female role, wearing a dark robe with striped and floral patterning before a bare tree and ornamental fence. The setting gives the figure a particular place while the clothing carries much of the visual detail. Katsukawa Shunshō preserves the named actor without securely identifying the dramatic character, allowing the performer’s presentation to remain central.
The 1774 color woodblock print uses ink and color on paper, carrying the actor’s presence beyond the time of a performance into a continuing image. Its interest lies in that lasting encounter, where a named person associated with theater remains available to close attention. The portrait invites looking without requiring a complete dramatic narrative to make the performer’s presence meaningful or a speculative role to fill the catalogue’s silence.
