Description

A standing nude occupies the lower center of Noa Noa, surrounded by plants and animal forms beneath an ornamental title area. Paul Gauguin developed the woodcut in 1893–94 for his project of the same name; this impression was printed in 1921. The tall arrangement brings lettering, figures and vegetation into a common patterned space, giving the sheet a presence that is both pictorial and connected to a book.

The title is commonly rendered as Fragrant Scent, suggesting an experience that exceeds a straightforward account of an event. The project’s prints act as imaginative counterparts to Gauguin’s text rather than illustrations arranged in a fixed sequence. Here, carved lines and opposing dark and pale shapes give the figure and surrounding forms their own visual rhythm. The later impression preserves the design’s inventive structure while remaining distinct from the moment of its creation.
