Description

In this portrait of Onoe Tamizō’s female role, Katsukawa Shunshō sets a sideways-turned head above a long striped robe. A broad dark shape projects behind the shoulder, counterbalancing the clothing’s vertical lines. The figure’s directed attention gives the still pose a theatrical expectancy without securely naming the object or person beyond the frame.

Made around 1774, the work was printed in ink and color on paper. Its theatrical interest lies in a quiet, held position rather than a named dramatic action. The standing figure becomes a study of presentation: a performer makes another identity visible through an appearance sustained for the audience. Shunshō’s print preserves that moment without supplying an uncertain character name or story, leaving the figure’s directed presence as its central subject.
