Description

In Nakamura Nakazō I as Shimada no Hachizō, Katsukawa Shunshō makes the actor’s striding movement a central feature. Ornate robes follow the body beneath reddish maple leaves, joining the figure’s action to a seasonal canopy. The print holds an instant of movement without making the actor seem static, as though his next step lies just beyond the image.

Dated 1783, this ink-and-color woodblock print offers a lasting counterpart to the temporary presence of the stage. Nakazō’s name provides the individual anchor, while Hachizō supplies the dramatic identity through which he appears. Shunshō’s portrait holds those two ways of knowing a person together. Its subject is the transformation itself, a moment when the performer’s presence and the character’s identity become connected for an audience.
