Description
Picasso’s Acrobat Family with a Monkey turns circus life into an intimate family gathering. A man in pink tights sits at the left, while a woman in a pale costume holds a baby on her lap. Below them, a small brown monkey extends a hand into their shared space. Soft blues and pinks surround the group, replacing the spectacle of performance with a subdued moment of companionship.
Made in 1905, the work belongs to Picasso’s Rose Period and his sustained interest in circus performers away from the ring. The Gothenburg Museum places it among scenes that reveal the quieter, sometimes melancholy lives behind the entertainment. Here the seated poses and the child’s small presence slow the picture’s rhythm. The monkey adds another attentive participant, helping bind the separate figures into a gently balanced group.
