Description
In Neither Do These, Francisco Goya places an assault beneath a shadowed arch. A soldier drags a resisting woman while a small child remains on the ground nearby; farther back, another violent encounter unfolds. The architecture encloses the figures rather than protecting them. Bright clothing and the child’s pale body stand out against the dark space, heightening the sense of exposure.
Plate 11 of The Disasters of War continues Goya’s indictment of wartime violence against women. The child’s separation from the mother adds an intimate consequence to the physical struggle. Carefully drawn gestures make resistance visible, while the enclosing shadows suggest how little help is available. The print offers neither a dramatic rescue nor a comforting conclusion, forcing attention onto the people whom conventional accounts of war often leave at the margins.
