Description
In It’s a hard step!, figures move beside a ladder in a scene associated with execution, turning an ordinary structure into the means of a fatal passage. Francisco Goya’s It’s a Hard Step! gives the physical ascent a bitter emotional meaning. The participants’ proximity makes the event feel immediate, with support and coercion difficult to separate within the action.
Made around 1810 and published in 1863, plate 14 of The Disasters of War uses etching and tonal work to establish the scene without heroic distance. Goya’s caption draws attention to the step itself, allowing a small bodily movement to carry the weight of what is approaching. The image’s force lies in that concentrated interval, when a person is made to cross toward an outcome already controlled by others and an everyday action acquires irreversible significance.
