Description
In A pretty piece of advice, a young woman listens beside an older companion, their proximity giving the exchange the character of advice passed in confidence. In A Pretty Piece of Advice, Francisco Goya places the promise of guidance under ironic scrutiny. The difference between the figures’ ages and expressions invites the viewer to consider what experience is being offered and to whose advantage.
Plate 15 of Los Caprichos, published in 1799, belongs to the series’ examination of courtship, appearances and interested persuasion. Etching and burnished aquatint lend weight to the seated encounter while keeping attention on faces and gestures. The caption sounds complimentary, yet it introduces doubt about the quality of the counsel. Goya allows the scene to hover between intimacy and manipulation, making a quiet conversation carry the tension of a larger social transaction.
