Description
An adult strikes a child amid laundry in If He Broke the Pot, bringing punishment into a recognizable household setting. The title supplies the ordinary mishap used to explain the encounter, while the child’s vulnerability gives the scene its sharper human meaning. A small domestic story becomes an image of authority exercised over someone unable to answer it equally.
Plate 25 of Los Caprichos belongs to Goya’s searching examination of familiar habits and accepted behavior. Etching and aquatint give the scene a directness suited to its compact subject, where the relationship between adult and child carries the meaning. The image is compelling because it leaves the title’s excuse exposed, asking how much cruelty can be hidden inside the apparently simple language of discipline.
