Description
Men carry and heap the dead in Charity, giving an apparently benevolent title a difficult human setting. The work of handling bodies makes care practical, heavy and unsettling, far from an idealized gesture of generosity. Goya asks the viewer to consider compassion where suffering has become overwhelming and the needs of others cannot be met comfortably.
Goya’s etched design belongs to a series concerned with the consequences of conflict for particular people. Drypoint and burin join the etched line, giving the scene a surface of carefully differentiated marks. Its force comes from the tension between the title’s promise and the circumstances before the viewer, making charity something to examine through action rather than accept as a reassuring name.
