Description
Tauromaquia Plate 32 by Francisco Goya brings the disorder of the bullring into stark focus. A bull drives forward through a tangle of fallen horses and riders, while nearby figures reach and hurry toward the struggle. The overlapping bodies form a dense, unsettled knot of movement against the dark arena.
Created in 1816, this plate from La Tauromaquia depicts two teams of picadors thrown in succession by one bull. Goya’s sharply worked lines pick out straining limbs, flowing manes and anxious faces. Broad passages of aquatint deepen the surrounding shadow, making the pale bodies stand out with dramatic clarity. The composition conveys the instability of a spectacle in which control can disappear in an instant.
