Description

In Everything Is Topsy-Turvy, Francisco Goya gathers robed men in a confused departure. Their faces and pointing hands suggest disagreement over where to go, while belongings and close-packed bodies impede an orderly movement. Much of the surrounding paper remains relatively open, making the group’s competing gestures conspicuous. The scene turns dislocation into a state of visible uncertainty.

Plate 42 of The Disasters of War shows conflict overturning established routines as well as destroying bodies and buildings. Religious figures, often accustomed to stable institutions, appear here unsettled and displaced. Goya’s caricatural faces introduce satire without removing the scene’s anxiety. The title names a world in which familiar roles and directions no longer hold, allowing the group’s confused movement to speak more broadly about the disruption of an entire society.
