Description

Tauromaquia Plate 7 by Francisco Goya brings a dramatic encounter into focus. A man raises a banderilla as he extends a flowing cape toward a waiting bull, with onlookers gathered behind him. The two central figures face one another across a quiet interval of ground, creating a moment of anticipation rather than a rush of action. The cape’s long curve links them, while the fence and watching figures establish the ring beyond.

Francisco Goya made this work in 1816 as part of La Tauromaquia. Its subject considers the origins of the banderillas used in bullfighting. Etched detail and burnished aquatint give the scene its contrasts of dark clothing, pale fabric and textured ground, turning a poised gesture into a study of tension.
