Description
Polander Standing with Arms Folded presents a standing figure whose folded arms give the study its defining gesture. In Rembrandt’s etching, dated 1630–40 by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the interest lies in the person’s stance and the way the body is held. The historical title directs attention to a figure type, while the posture gives the image an immediate human character. With little narrative action, the subject remains the presence of the man himself.
The folded arms create a contained shape within the standing body, lending the figure a sense of composure. The work invites the viewer to consider how a simple gesture can organize an image and suggest a moment of pause. It belongs to Rembrandt’s exploration of people encountered through their appearance and bearing. The associated museum example is accession 22.52.2; the historical title is retained without asserting an independently established identity for the sitter.
