Description

In Reine de Joie, a man and woman lean close together at a table, with the man’s dark coat and the woman’s hair forming bold neighboring shapes. Text occupies the lower part of the image. The compact encounter gives the literary title a human face, making proximity more prominent than a broad description of the story.

Made in 1892, the lithograph was printed by Edward Ancourt in four colors on machine-made wove paper. Toulouse-Lautrec joins artistic invention to a form capable of circulation, giving the work a material life beyond a single painted surface. Its interest lies in the connection between a title and the figures through which it becomes visible. The print allows an imagined world to acquire a memorable public face while preserving the immediate encounter with the image itself.
