Description

Francisco Goya’s Ridiculous Folly seats a crowded group on an enormous branch suspended above an unseen depth. Wrapped in heavy garments, the figures seem absorbed in themselves, scarcely responding to a standing speaker who extends a hand toward them. The branch has no clearly visible beginning or end. Their calm presence becomes troubling because the support beneath them is so strange and precarious.

Created around 1815–1819 and published with the Disparates in 1864, the image turns ordinary social stillness into an enigma. Goya offers no certain reason for the gathering or its unlikely location. The dark aquatint setting and pale bundled bodies make isolation visible even within a crowd. Its unsettling effect lies in the difference between the danger suggested by the setting and the apparent indifference of those occupying it.
