Description
Moonlight opens through a dark wooded landscape in Rispah, designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Robert Dunkarton. A woman stands amid bodies near the center, while a bright moon shines at the right. The surrounding darkness gives the biblical subject a grave atmosphere, joining human vigil to a landscape that seems to enclose its sorrow.
Published on April 23, 1812, the etching and mezzotint belongs to Liber Studiorum. Turner brings a remembered story into a landscape project, while Dunkarton’s tonal engraving gives the design a distinct printed surface. The image’s interest lies in the relationship between a particular human subject and the surrounding world. The scene can be considered through its figures and atmosphere together, allowing a sacred episode to acquire visual presence without the entire story needing to be retold.
