Description
Sack of a City packs a vertical field with bodies, riders and armor. A massive column at the right gives the crowded lower passages a fixed architectural counterweight, while curving stone structures frame the activity behind them. Brown and gray washes deepen the tangled scene, allowing some figures to emerge distinctly while others remain absorbed within the surrounding movement.
The work is attributed to the school of Polidoro da Caravaggio and uses brown ink with brown and gray washes over charcoal. That qualification identifies an artistic relationship without claiming the master’s own hand. Its varied materials contribute to the scene’s restless character, with drawn outlines and softer tones playing different roles. Together, they make the subject legible through the arrangement of groups, movement and contrasting areas of emphasis.
