Description
Saint Eustace by Albrecht Dürer pauses a hunting scene at the instant of revelation. The kneeling hunter faces a stag with a crucifix between its antlers, while his horse stands close by and several dogs occupy the foreground. A wooded hillside and distant castle extend the scene upward, creating a richly layered landscape around the encounter.
Engraved around 1501, the work depicts the conversion of the Roman general who became known as Eustace. Its spiritual drama unfolds amid exceptionally attentive observations of animals, trees and rocky ground. The stillness of the hunter contrasts with the natural behavior of the dogs, giving the miraculous event a setting that remains full of ordinary life.
