Description
Saint Jerome in His Study by Albrecht Dürer shows Jerome bent over a book in a compact room, with his lion resting close beside the desk. A hanging curtain, shelves and small household objects make the setting feel occupied and particular. Saint Jerome in His Study turns the scholar’s absorbed posture into the center of an interior whose many details seem to share in his concentration.
Dated 1514, this woodcut differs from Dürer’s celebrated engraving of the same subject. Its closer arrangement places the saint and lion near the viewer, while bold lines give cloth, timber and books a firm material presence. The curtain creates a sheltered edge, emphasizing the intimacy of the room. The image’s calm comes from the relationship between study and companionship, allowing the saint’s work to unfold within a space that feels both secluded and warmly inhabited.
