Description
Saint John Before God and the Elders is a woodcut by Albrecht Dürer from his Apocalypse cycle. Its subject brings the visionary saint into the heavenly court described in the Book of Revelation. The gathering of elders around divine authority gives the scene the character of an audience, joining the act of witnessing with solemn adoration.
The relationship between John and the assembled figures carries the image’s meaning. A human observer confronts an ordered spiritual realm, and the many participants expand the vision beyond a solitary encounter. Dürer’s woodcut language gives the complex subject a firm graphic presence, allowing individual figures to contribute to a larger religious narrative. The Metropolitan Museum of Art dates its associated example to 1511. Saint John Before God and the Elders explores revelation through gathering, hierarchy and devotion.
