Description

Saint Paul, by an artist in the circle of Jan van Eyck, presents the apostle in a compact drawing on vellum. The folds of his robe and the carefully defined contours give the figure a sculptural stillness, while small touches of purple and gold enrich the sword’s hilt.

Dating to about 1430, the work belongs to the early Netherlandish tradition. Its fine pen and brushwork brings the devotional figure close to the viewer through detail and an attentive treatment of drapery.
