Description
Rembrandt’s Seated Man Wearing a Flat Cap sits with his legs apart beside a vertical doorway, his face directed toward the left. Rembrandt gives the seated figure a substantial presence within an economical setting, letting the body’s placement establish the scene. The nearby architectural line helps anchor the pose, while the cap and turned head draw attention toward the individual rather than the room.
Dating from 1635–40, the drawing combines pen and brown ink with brushed wash and touches of white gouache. The different marks let firm accents coexist with softer areas, giving the study both structure and immediacy. The sitter’s broad position carries much of the composition, making an ordinary seated moment engaging through the balance between bodily weight, selected detail and the surrounding open paper.
