Description

Seated Woman in Bonnet and Shawl by Edgar Degas sets a pale bonnet and broad shawl against muted gray tones. Darker bands make the face and clothing appear through the surrounding texture, giving an ordinary likeness an absorbing, slightly elusive presence. The subject rewards attention to the relationship between a person, her garments and the marks that bring them into view.

The design dates to around 1879 and combines aquatint, drypoint and etching. These processes bring tone and several kinds of line into conversation, allowing the seated figure to emerge through varied marks rather than painted color. The image’s appeal lies in its concentration on a small human subject. A person quietly occupying space becomes engaging through the relationship between body, clothing and surface, demonstrating how close attention can give everyday appearances lasting interest.
