About Ships Riding on the Seine at Rouen
Claude Monet’s Ships Riding on the Seine at Rouen, dated 1872–1873, sets two sailing vessels against a bright sky and a distant riverbank. Their tall masts and light sails rise above blue water broken into lively reflections. Trees, buildings and low hills give the scene depth without drawing attention away from the ships. The balance of upright rigging and horizontal strokes creates a calm view animated by light. The original painting belongs to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
