Description
Curved tiers and broad elliptical lines give Eugène Delacroix’s architectural sketch a distinct sense of enclosure. The pencil drawing investigates an interior whose arrangement invites the eye to follow its changing levels. Tentatively identified as an arena, the setting can be encountered through its structure without assigning a more certain function or imagined event to the space.
Made in 1832, the drawing uses graphite. Its character as a sketch gives the work the intimacy of inquiry rather than the resolution of a finished architectural view. Delacroix’s subject allows the eye to consider space as something being explored, making the process of attention part of its appeal. The image can remain engaging through its arrangement even where the exact identification of the site is not fully settled.
