Description
Spring (1900) by Alphonse Mucha welcomes the season with an armful of flowers. A fair-haired woman holds a generous bouquet against her shoulder, while her green drapery falls in long, sweeping folds. Warm orange fills the background, and a patterned border encloses the figure like a decorative frame. Pale blossoms rise from below, carrying the floral rhythm through the entire composition.
This design belongs to Mucha’s 1900 Seasons series, a later interpretation of a theme he first explored in 1896. Produced as a color lithograph by F. Champenois in Paris, it brings the flowing outlines and botanical ornament of Art Nouveau into a striking vertical panel. The French title, Printemps, means spring. Its bouquet-bearing figure distinguishes this version from the white-robed woman beneath a flowering tree in the earlier design.
The appeal of Spring (1900) by Alphonse Mucha lies in its balance of warmth and movement. Green fabric, golden hair and pink flowers create a lively harmony against the orange ground. The strong outline of the figure gives structure to the abundant floral detail, making this an inviting choice for an interior that celebrates botanical subjects, decorative pattern and the graceful character of Art Nouveau.
