Description
St. Catharine’s Hill follows a peaceful road toward a ruined hilltop chapel, trees casting late-afternoon shadows while horses enter a farmyard. J. M. W. Turner gives St. Catharine’s Hill a landscape of connected paths and inhabited edges. The distant ruin provides a landmark without overtaking the quieter foreground, allowing travel, shelter and the surrounding terrain to share the scene’s pastoral character.
Issued in 1811 for Liber Studiorum, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner, with J. C. Easling supplying the engraving. Tonal work gives the trees and road their different emphases, making light part of the landscape’s organization. The print carries attention gradually toward the hill, where the chapel remains distinct within a place shaped by everyday movement and use.
