Description
In Saint Jerome Reading in an Italian Landscape, the saint reads within a shaded, rocky setting that extends far beyond his small figure. A bridge or rocky span and the rising terrain lead toward hills and a tower at the upper right. The setting gives contemplation a particular scale: a quiet reader occupies one corner of a much larger world.
Made about 1653, the print combines etching, drypoint and engraving; this second-state impression is on oatmeal paper. The title identifies an Italian landscape rather than a literal record of the saint’s own surroundings. Rembrandt brings a devotional subject into the varied spaces of a landscape, allowing the rocks and distant structures to retain their own interest. The image invites the eye to move outward from the reader while keeping his absorbed presence as its human anchor.
