Description
In Studies of a Goat, a faint side-profile animal appears near the top of Delacroix’s spacious sheet, with smaller head studies gathered below. The restrained pencil marks invite a close look rather than announcing the subject through strong contrast. Eugène Delacroix makes separate animal observations part of one encounter, allowing the relationship between whole form and smaller details to shape the drawing’s interest.
Made in graphite on wove paper, the drawing preserves the animal through the direct means of a drawn line. A secure individual creation date is not supplied by the broad catalogue range, so the encounter can remain in the study itself. Its interest lies in the concentration of attention, allowing an ordinary creature to become a particular subject without needing an elaborate setting or symbolic identity.
