Description

An outlined seated lion occupies the upper part of the sheet while a bent female nude appears below through torso and legs. Eugène Delacroix gives animal and human form separate spaces within one working encounter. The ink drawing invites attention to the relationship between different studies, allowing their juxtaposition to preserve a process of looking rather than requiring a single narrative to connect them.

Dating to around 1844, the drawing uses pen and brown ink on heavy laid paper. The direct marks give separate forms room to develop within the same surface, preserving the variety of an artist’s working attention. Its interest lies in those differences, where a lion’s seated outline and a human body’s bending position can each carry a particular presence without becoming parts of an invented shared scene.
