Description
In Study of Figures from Michelangelo’s Last Judgment, three muscular male bodies press into a compact group. One figure faces outward, another is seen in profile above him, and a third turns his back with an arm raised. Their overlapping limbs and changing orientations create a rhythm of tension and rotation, while red chalk gives the bodies a unified, warm presence on the pale sheet.
Dated 1540–50, this drawing is catalogued as a study after Michelangelo rather than a work by him. It concentrates on figures from the Sistine Chapel’s Last Judgment, separating a small group from the monumental fresco. That focused borrowing makes the mechanics of the composition easier to follow: bodies link through shared edges, contrasting views and gestures that carry movement from one figure into the next.
